Martha H. Schuetz

Biography

Martha H. Schuetz age 89 passed away April 30, 2015. Martha was born in Lucerene, Switzerland in 1925 to Helena and Gottfried Schuetz Sr. She had one older brother Godie. As a young woman she suffered a long illness of tuberculosis and in the custom of the times had to spend a year at a TB rehabilitation facility. She was a determined woman and recovered and thrived. Her parents migrated to Wisconsin and her mother opened a Swiss restaurant. They were a cheese making family and this was the ideal beginning. Martha and her mother moved to Taos in 1962. She worked at Taos Ski Valley for Ernie Blake, started her own Beauty Salon in the jail of the County Court House and would hostess in the evening at her brothers restaurant, Casa Cordova, along side her mother, Mama Shuetz. Martha had many interests, some well-known and some that were not. Skiing the mountains of Colorado and Taos Ski Valley; fishing the lakes and streams of New Mexico; hiking several times to the floor of the Grand Canyon; photography; travel in the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Mexico and Europe; watching tennis and the Denver Broncos on T.V.; and she and her brother knew the best places to hunt mushrooms. Martha looked forward to and enjoyed going to lunch with her many friends and to having coffee at Rickys with her three amigos. She was deeply loved by Taosenos, people from all cultures, and an active member of her church. She was a devoted friend, an honorable and good woman. She donated generously to local charities, giving people a helping hand when they were in need, giving encouragement when it could help. Martha would want to thank Dr. Lucas Schreiber and Mountain Home Health Care who saw to her needs and made sure she was comfortable. Martha was thankful for the many friends who called and looked in on her this past year.

Funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 10 am on Friday, June 5th followed by a luncheon at the Trading Post Café at Noon. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Stray Hearts, Mountain Home Health Care or Ensuenos Y Los Angelitos Development Center.

Martha and Godi were like Aunt and Uncle to us. Mama Scheutz another grandma. They were always at our house for the Holidays and every special occasion. She lit her candle Christmas tree for us on a few occasions and it was a experience I will never forget. She taught my son to fish when he was as little and when he caught nothing she gave him a wooden fish instead. Her and Godi loved to entertain and share their stories and we loved to listen. I am sure mom and dad and Godi had a party the day Martha arrived.
